About Us
Mission
The mission of the Erie County Diabetes Association is to combat the growing epidemic of diabetes in our community by increasing public awareness, promoting prevention, and helping individuals understand and responsibly manage their diagnosis.
History
In 1970, a group of concerned parents rallied together to form an organization known then as Parents of Diabetic Children Inc. In 1982, membership was extended to include all diabetic individuals, their families, and other interested persons. The group became the Erie County Diabetes Association Inc.
Philosophy
It is the organization’s belief that the most effective ways of dealing with diabetes are facing denial, learning all you can about diabetes, and having contact with people with diabetes and their families who share and understand the problems you are facing in managing the disease. Our commitment to diabetes includes promoting initiatives to prevent diabetes. We wholeheartedly support the current resolution to “Unite for Diabetes.”
Services
ECDA strives to reduce the risk factors for diabetes and barriers to its care. To uphold this challenge, we offer a variety of outreach services aimed at educating the community about diabetes prevention and management. We also assist the uninsured and underinsured diabetic population by providing safety-net diabetes supplies, navigation through the health care system, and 1:1 nurse education. All of our services are designed to “bridge the gaps” and augment what other community providers offer.
